Student Showcase 2023

Saturday, June 10 (Rain Date: June 11) | 11am & 2pm

Underground at InkBlock: 90 Traveler St, Boston

Welcome to Urbanity’s Student Showcase 2023! We are thrilled to have this opportunity to celebrate and cheer on our young dancers. Please make sure to read all of the information below before purchasing tickets.

Call Times for Dancers

  • For dancers in Kids Dance (ages 4-5 on 9/1/22), dancers are to arrive 90 minutes before their show time (9:30am and 12:30pm) to run through their choreography on stage.

  • For all other dancers (Primary and Teen classes, ages 6+ on 9/1/22), call time is one hour before their show time (10:00am and 1:00pm).

We ask that you are on site by the above call times. Dancers can stay with their friends/families upon arrival but should be seated with their class no later than 15 minutes prior to the performance. Dancers will be dismissed by program (Kids, Primary, Teen) from the stage at the end of the show to return to their families.

Call for Volunteers!

We are in need of incredible Dance Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Family, Friends to help out at the show. If you want to volunteer but didn’t indicate it on the survey sent out in March, please email studio@urbanitydance.org to let us know if you’re interested in helping out with any of the following:

  • Do you love to bake? Bake an item for our Bake Sale (all baked goods must be nut-free). All bake sale proceeds go towards our Access4All Scholarship Fund.

  • Are you good at organizing? Manage the table for our Bake Sale. All bake sale proceeds go towards our Access4All Scholarship Fund.

  • Do you have a truck or van? Transport folding chairs to and from Urbanity studios to Underground at Inkblock and help us set them up.

  • Are you good with children? Help out as one of the designated grown ups to sit with your child’s class.

  • Do you love to clean? Help make sure the space is cleared/clean before and after the show.

Pre-Performance Questions

What if my dancer can no longer perform? What if I said my dancer couldn’t perform but now they can?

If your dancer’s RSVP has changed since we emailed a month ago, please let us know. There will be an opportunity to update your dancer’s RSVP as well as confirm the spelling of their name for the show program in-person during Observation Week (May 1-7). You can also email us at studio@urbanitydance.org.

What is the costume?

Students should plan to come to the performance “show ready,” meaning dressed and ready to perform:

  • Showcase t-shirt, which will be handed out in class two weeks prior to the show. (The t-shirt has a custom-designed graphic commissioned by Urbanity faculty member Ice Brown)

  • Black pants, athletic style or leggings to allow for ease of movement.

  • Footwear by style:

    • Hip Hop: Sneakers

    • Contemporary/Modern: Non-slip socks or bare feet

    • Ballet: Ballet slippers

    • Jazz: Jazz shoes

    • Kids Dance: Non-slip socks of any color

  • Hair should be pulled back away from the face. No jewelry, with the exception of small stud earrings and/or religious items. Stage make up is not necessary nor required.

  • Masks are optional.

Ticket Questions

Does my dancer need a ticket? Will they be able to see the show?

No, your dancer does not need a ticket for the show(s) they are performing in. Performers will be seated in the “performer section” with their classmates/teacher and will be able to see the show from there.

What are your ticket options?

The audience is divided into four sections: Chairs, Floor, Standing Room, and Preferred. The Chairs and Preferred sections have a mix of folding chairs and benches; the Floor section will have yoga mats available, or you can bring your own blanket; and the Standing Room section is standing only.

Do you have accessible seating options, or other accessibility accommodations?

The performance space is wheelchair-accessible; please note on your ticket if you need space for wheelchairs, other mobility aids, etc. Note that the venue is open-air and located under a highway, so folks with sensory concerns should be aware that there will be traffic sounds coming from all directions (from cars, trains, trucks, etc). Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at studio@urbanitydance.org or 617-572-3727 if there is something we can provide to make the performance as accessible as possible!

If I purchase a “floor” ticket, what does that mean?

The Floor section is the one closest to the stage (ground area surrounding stage). Note that the floor surface is smoothed asphalt, but you may bring your own yoga mat or blanket.

What if I have kid(s) in both shows?

We recognize that it is an added expense to have a kid(s) in both shows. As such, if you buy tickets to both shows, tickets for the second show are 50% off (email studio@urbanitydance.org for the code). You may also reserve your seats for the second show thirty minutes before the “doors” open to the rest of the audience (i.e.during the time in-between shows).

Is it general admission? Can I reserve seats?

Seating is general admission by section (Chairs, Floor, Standing Room, and Preferred). There are no assigned seats therein. “Doors” open one hour pre-show, so audience members may begin choosing their seats at 10:00am and 1:00pm before each show.

Does my baby/toddler need a seat?

If your baby/toddler does not require their own seat, their admission is free. If your baby/toddler requires their own seat, we ask that you purchase a ticket to reserve a seat for them.

Are tickets refundable?

Tickets are non-refundable.

When will you make a determination regarding moving the show to the rain date?

The rain date for the performance is Sunday, June 11th, same times, same location. Patrons and families will be notified by email no later than Friday, June 9th, at 9pm if the performance will be moved to Sunday due to rain.

Performance Questions

Do you allow audience members to take photos/videos of their dancer on stage?

We ask that audience members do not photograph or videotape the show for several reasons: (1) devices are distracting to dancers, which becomes a safety issue; (2) it takes away the magic that happens when we are present with live dance performance and with our young dancers; and (3) it is a safety/liability concern, as we cannot control who is filming, what they are filming, and where they may post or use the footage.

Will there be a photos/video recording of the performance available?

For photographs, we encourage families to use the beautiful mural walls in the graffiti park and/or the stage itself for personal dance photos before or after the show. For video, Urbanity is filming the show, and families will have the option to purchase a digital copy for $20/show when they purchase their tickets (the option to purchase a copy of the video will be presented at check out). The video is meant to be used as a personal memento and to share with family/friends. Posting the video online or on social media is not permitted.
