Urbanity Auditions: Creative Class

Auditions for Urbanity's Creative Class (Underground, UrManity, and Junior Apprentices) for the 2017-2018 season will be
Sunday August 6, 2017 1-3pm

We suggest letting us know you're planning to attend ahead of time. Email photo and bio or resume to betsi@urbanitydance.org.

There is a $10 audition fee.

What to expect at the audition:

The audition works as a class, including ballet tendus, pirouettes, a modern release combo, leaps across the floor, improvisation exercises, and a final combination. The combo will highlight Urbanity's style, weaving fluid release "gooey" technique with the ability to fiercely hit notes of choreography with specificity and attack. We're looking for wow-factor, appeal, and willingness to create.

Performance opportunities:

1) Creative Class Showcase: Dancers have opportunities to choreograph and perform in works by their fellows. Performance slated for January, 2018 at Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center

2) Urbanity NEXT: Urbanity's Residency Program

3) Spring Revue: A performance the first week of June

*Additional performance opportunities vary per company, and include commercial gigs, paid opportunities, dance festivals and community performances.*

Video auditions:

Video auditions will be accepted for the Creative Class. Please include: 1) Ballet adagio and allegro 2) Leap and turn combination 3) One 2 minute solo which showcases your style (if solo incorporates leaps, turns, and release, then a solo + ballet adagio/allegro is sufficient). Please post your videos to YouTube/Vimeo and email company@urbanitydance.org with attached bio/head shot, introducing yourself and explaining why you would be an asset to Urbanity. Video auditions are due by August 2nd at 12pm. There is a $10 audition fee for video auditions.

What is the "Creative Class" and what are the sub-companies?

Urbanity Underground: Urbanity Underground (UU) is Urbanity's successful female company, comprised of working professionals and college students. A competitive program, UU dancers can pursue dancing professionally while also working jobs and pursuing graduate programs ranging from Tech Specialists, HR and Marketing Professionals, Med Students, Nurses, Lawyers, Financial Analysts, Dance Teachers, and Physical Therapists. Urbanity Underground is a company rich with heart, human connection, professionalism, and terrific creators. Dancers have the option to apply for choreographic opportunities within the company. Dancers in Underground have a lot of flexibility and may choose which months and which shows they would like to participate in. Dancers pay seasonal membership dues to participate for the season, which can either be paid directly by the dancer or by raising the funds through an Urbanity fundraiser.

UrManity: UrManity is Urbanity's project-based male pick-up company. Dancers can choose whether or not they would like to participate in each project as it comes up. Some projects are paid; others are volunteer. Dancers have diverse backgrounds including ballet, break dance, ballroom, and hip hop. TDancers pay seasonal membership dues to participate for the season, which can either be paid directly by the dancer or by raising the funds through an Urbanity fundraiser.

Junior Apprentices: This program is designed for high-schoolers who would like to gain experience dancing in a professional company and add experiences to their resume. We take great pride in helping pave the way for high school students to gain admission to strong dance schools including Juilliard, Boston Conservatory, University of Arizona, University of Michigan, Bennington College, and Alonzo King's LINES. We aim to nurture the next generation of dance-lovers, whatever the journey brings! Dancers pay a season stipend which covers the cost of costumes, choreography, performances, unlimited classes, and a monthly half-hour private coaching session.
